Mesothelioma Prognosis

Mesothelioma Prognosis

The Prognosis of malignant mesothelioma is generally unfavorable. This malignancy does not yet have a definitive method of management. However, today the various existing intervention methods have significantly increased the 5-year life expectancy of patients when compared with previous decades.

Complications

If left untreated, malignant mesothelioma patients generally only survive for 4-8 months. However, the management of mesothelioma itself often causes complications. For example, patients receiving HYPEC or hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy may experience myelosuppression.

Meanwhile, complications related to laparotomy and cytoreductive surgery are infection of the operating wound, prolonged ileus, obstruction, fascial dehiscence, urinary tract infection, sepsis, and fistula formation.

Prognosis

Mesothelioma Prognosis is poor because there is no definitive therapy. However, today the development of therapy has significantly increased the 5-year life expectancy of patients when compared to several decades ago.

In the past, mesothelioma patients were generally only able to survive for 9 months. Currently, mesothelioma patients can survive up to 5 years or more.

Factors that affect the prognosis are the histology of mesothelioma experienced. In epithelioid mesothelioma, the prognosis is generally better than that of the sarcomatoid and biphasic types.

In addition, the stage of the disease also greatly affects the patient's life expectancy. The life expectancy of 5 years in patients with stage I mesothelioma is 87%. However, this figure decreased to 53% in Stage II and decreased to 29% in Stage III.
